The James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department (JCBVFD) is located in Toano, Virginia in historic James City County. Founded in 1948, the JCBVFD covers the largest response area of all five James City County fire stations. This area spans the northwestern portion of James City County and is home to several upscale residential developments, fast-growing commercial areas, large industrial facilities, a major interstate highway as well as the York and Chickahominy Rivers.
To ensure adequate response readiness over such a diverse and large area, the Department maintains a fleet of two class-A pumpers, a squad truck equipped with a full complement of heavy rescue equipment, a 100' aerial platform, a 3500-gallon capacity tanker, a brush unit, and one boat.
The volunteers of the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department respond to a wide variety of emergency incidents including fires, vehicle accidents, technical rescues, maritime emergencies, HAZMAT incidents, and emergency medical events. These incidents average around 1500 calls for assistance annually.
The JCBVFD volunteers are equipped to provide emergency response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our volunteers boast a large diversity of backgrounds including, professional firefighters, high school and college students, business owners, engineers, and medical professionals. The volunteers are committed to maintaining a high level of training.
The Toano station is also staffed 24/7 with career firefighter/EMTs provided by the James City County Fire Department. James City County fire departments maintain extensive mutual-aid agreements with surrounding jurisdictions including York County, New Kent County, and the City of Williamsburg.
While the primary mission of the JCBVFD is to provide emergency fire and EMS response to the residents and visitors of the area, our department is also proud to serve as an active member of the community in non-emergency situations.
In 2009, the James City-Bruton Farmer's Market was opened across the street from the fire station. The Farmer's Market provides local produce vendors and crafters a location to sell their wares from April through December. The farmer's market provides much-needed income to the Department. Members of the JCBVFD are also involved in several community service projects throughout the year, assisting other local non-profit agencies and church groups.
The JCBVFD is also willing to assist residents with home smoke detector checks and installations as well as fire prevention education for children and small groups. The James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department has been proudly serving the citizens of upper James City County for over seventy years, and is excited to do so for years to come.
The James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department is a 501c3 non-profit organization and is glad to accept your tax-deductible donations in order to maintain our response readiness.
